I recently came across a baby carrier called 'The New Native Baby Carrier,' and from the looks of it, it's nothing but a blanket wrapped around your shoulder with a pouch for the infant to cradle in. It doesn't look comfortable, but it's cheaper than most. There's obvious Indian connotations in this sling, after all, that's how the Native Americans carried their infants. There are no zippers, buttons, bulky rings or anything like that to deal with, only a natural cut of breathable, durable, soft organic fabric wrapping your infant up in a pouch. That's it! Pretty simple design.
But that's not all, it leaves your hands free to do work around the house, carry your luggage when going to the airport, flag down a taxi, mix a drink, make a snack, and the way the baby sits in the pouch, you could set an ashtray on his head without bending over to flip your ashes on the coffee table ashtray, magnificent! Just be careful bending over with the baby in the pouch, he may fall head first onto the floor.
They are also easy to wash. Let's say your toddler throws up all over the sling, all you have to do is wash it in cold water, tumble it dry and put it back on. And it comes in different colors, you can choose from: black, aqua, stone, organic or brown, and at less than thirty dollars, it's probably the best buy you'll ever find.
They are fairly simple to make as well. Just hunt for your favorite fabric, not too itchy, not to heavy, not to flimsy or boring. Once you find the fabric, just stitch the edges so they don't fray, then take the baby carrier end and roll-hem it for a nice finish. As far as the shoulder goes, just fold and sew to size at the shoulder so you'll never have to worry about slippage or constantly adjusting the shoulder harness. And when not in use, they are easy to store, just find the top seam, hold it up draped over your hand, pull the curved seam to match the sides, and roll up the baby sling.
